Every year, 60 million tons of food are wasted in the U.S1. Gradually reducing food waste by 15 percent will help cut hunger in half2. Sodexo is committed to ongoing food recovery efforts – collaborating with food recovery partners and donating hundreds of thousands of pounds of food to local food banks across the country.
Sodexo's top priority after preventing food waste is to feed the hungry. Our food recovery and donation efforts are highlighted below.
Food Donations – Sodexo teams donate perishable and non-perishable food year-round to local hunger relief organizations.
Stop Hunger Food Drive – During this annual companywide fall food drive, Sodexo communities donate non-perishable food to local charities.
WasteLESS Week – Sodexo rallies around WasteLESS week each October―coinciding with Food Day―to heighten awareness and motivate action about food waste and its connection to hunger.
Feeding America supplies more than three billion pounds of food and grocery products annually. Sodexo and Sodexo Foundation are longtime supporters of Feeding America through food donations and skills-based volunteerism (utilizing our culinary expertise). Additionally, many of our employees serve on food bank boards and support local backpack food programs.
Food Recovery Network unites college students to fight food waste and hunger by recovering surplus perishable food on campus and donating it to people in need. Today, there are approximately 40 active chapters at Sodexo accounts in our campus division.
The Campus Kitchens Project is a national community service organization that works with students from high schools, colleges and universities to recover surplus food from cafeterias. Currently, there are Campus Kitchens on more than 20 Sodexo-supported campuses and we are proud to have Sodexo employees take on active volunteer roles at many locations.
Food donations play a critical role in fighting hunger, and with a winning combination of an engaged workforce, strong partnerships and youth engagement, ending hunger is possible! Learn more about Sodexo Foundation’s partnerships.
