
When the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its annual report on Household Food Security in November, the numbers were sobering. In 2008, 17 million households were food insecure and families had difficulty putting enough food on the table at times during the year, up from 13 million households in 2007. The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently issued a report funded, by the Sodexo Foundation, that details the diverse and innovative steps cities are taking to fulfill President Obama’s goal to end childhood hunger by 2015. Sodexo invited mayors to describe the initiatives that have proved effective in their cities—best practices that other mayors could emulate. “The Childhood Anti-Hunger Programs in 24 Cities” report details programs that reflect the commitment of municipal governments and private sector partners to maximize the effectiveness of existing relief efforts while expanding services to an increasing, at-risk, population.
